Best Bike GPs Of The Decade

Best Bike GPs Of The DecadeCustomer Review: Not bad
This is worth a look if you don\'t pay too much for it. If you watched the races in the 80s then you\'ll get a lot out of it, otherwise you\'ll get an insight into what the racing was like in those days. The production is fair, and it does look dated, but it\'s entertaining and I\'ll watch it more than once.

Customer Review: Not comparable with Satnav. A waste of money.
This program was very disappointing. I bought it with high hopes that it would obviate the need for a Satnav unit. Sadly, I feel my money was wasted. The following comments are necessary:

1. The route planner itself worked reasonably well, but no better than the several free route planners available on the Internet.

2. The GPS Unit worked - it was probably not made by Microsoft. It accurately placed the unit on the map.

3. The most damning feature was the fact that when you venture off the planned route, the programm declared \'off route\' repeatedly, but did nothing to help you get back on the route. Tom Tom and others automatically re-plan your route from the new location. Microsoft\'s version is useless. If you were driving, you would be completely stuck, as you would not be able to manually tell the program to do this.

4. Even when you stayed on the planned route, the program does not alert you in time of when to leave the motorway, etc. 300 yards is not sufficient warning when travelling at 70mph.

Amazon, I want my money back!

UK GPS Software with Ordnance Survey Maps for PC & PDA Great Britain Midlands

UK GPS Software with Ordnance Survey Maps for PC & PDA Great Britain MidlandsCustomer Review: Thumbs up for Fugawi
I have found this software to work very well with my Magellan Colour and in the tracking mode it actually shows you on the road, unlike Map & Travel 2003.

It took a while to get used to the interface and how to create waypoints, routes and tracks. All of which upload to the GPS unit quickly. If you install the relief information you can get a good idea of exactly how much upping and downing you are letting yourself in for before embarking on your next expedition.

If you download a track from your GPS the Fugawi software will, in addition to the relief map, calculate the average speeds for each leg, so you can see exactly how fast you were going.

The software keeps a record of all tracks, routes and waypoints and you can also export this information for back up or export purposes. To prevent the chaos that could occur from multiple marks all over the map you can select which ones you want to be visible. I\'ve imported to both Excel and Access without any problem and found it useful for creating printed route cards; which can include map references in numerous formats although UK users will probably stick to the OS or Lat/Long format.

The only gripes that I have are that moving around the map can be slow when you are in 1:50,000 (I\'ve got an AMD running at 1.7GHz with 768Mb RAM and there is still a delay) and the delay that can also occur when zooming to a different level. That said, once I got use to it I learnt that if you want to move to a completely different area that you should move up to 1:250,00 or 1:1,000,000 scale map, move to the new area and then back down to 1:50,000. This also relieves the problem of having to tell the software to load the adjacent map when you move from one region to the next; I\'ve got the 3 southern-most maps and, once they were all installed on the hard drive, the software had no problem with moving from one to the next.

Print outs are fine and replicate the area shown on the screen, so you can predict exactly what you are getting. In addition Fugawi adds the \'real\' scale to the printout just in case there is any room for confusion. There\'s a niggle here though; when printing I\'m informed that \"there is no area selected, print visible map?\" Perhaps I just haven\'t found out how to select an area yet.

You are not just restricted to printing maps; the software neatly uploaded maps to my Palm M515 and you have the option of greyscale or colour maps, depending on how much RAM you have available. I don\'t have a GPS unit for the Palm but I understand that if you do the map can be tracked just as if you were using Fugawi with a laptop and GPS.

There are numerous features or aspects of the software that I have not touched, some because I am sure that I would end up breaking the accuracy because of the detailed level of control you are presented with; but this is nothing unusual with such a well designed piece of software - exactly how much do most people know about using all the features in Word or Excel, for example?

On the whole an excellent bit of software that provides, for one package, about 50 or so OS maps, which if bought separately would cost you significantly more than the software without the benefit of the computer facilities.

An excellent purchase for anyone that is into trekking or mountain biking, or who works with an organisation, such as the Scouts, Guides or Cadets and needs to provide detailed and accurate route cards.

GPS the Easy Way (2nd Edition)

GPS the Easy Way (2nd Edition)Customer Review: this book should never have been published
I have used the author\'s map of La Gomera and found it to be excellent, so when I saw this book I thought it would be a good way to get more out of my GPS.

it contains the following useful information:
- you can use a GPS on land (as well as at sea)
- on land, the GOTO function is useless - you need to use a ROUTE (with waypoints either entered yourself from a map or bought from the author)

That\'s it.

The rest is a waste of time, in my opinion. I expect the author published this himself, as no editor would consider publishing something so poorly written, with such a confused structure, containing so much irrelevant material, involving so much repetition or written in such a colloquial style.
Customer Review: A must for beginners
This little book is designed to explain how to get the most out of your GPS unit. It is not a substitute for the manual. Entertainingly written, it shows the strengths and limitations of GPS then goes on to explain how to get the most out of your new gadget. The theme of the book is \"what can GPS do for me\" and if you approach it with this message in mind then it will do a great deal. Incidently, be sure to check the latest specs of the various units reviewed in the back of the book. I have just bought a Garmin eTrex which is not highly rated, probably because of perceived lack of memory. The latest spec is better than the author suggests.

GPS for Walkers: An Introduction to GPS and Digital Maps (Pathfinder)

GPS for Walkers: An Introduction to GPS and Digital Maps (Pathfinder)Customer Review: Step by Step Guide
This book can be used as a step by step guide to get the most out of your GPS. I would recommend reading this book even before buying the gadget because it will help you in deciding what GPS you really need. I had read this book then I went to buy the GPS with specs that suits me. As a result it saved a lot of money because I bought Garmin eTrex Summit instead of a GPS from the top of the range.

Furthermore, the book is written for the British reader which means more explanation on how to use the GPS with British maps than the user manual.

Getting to Grips with GPS: Mastering the Skills of GPS Navigation and Digital Mapping

Getting to Grips with GPS: Mastering the Skills of GPS Navigation and Digital MappingCustomer Review: Throw out your Garmin owner\'s manual and use this instead.
Two easy steps to becoming a proficient GPS user:
1/ Throw out the Garmin owner\'s manual that comes with your unit, and
2/ Purchase \"Getting to Grips with GPS\".
I bought this book after attending two GPS day courses run by the authors and can say that this up-to-date book is a model of clarity and, most importantly, usability. I find it hard to see how it could be bettered. The book covers both Garmin and Magellan devices and it doesn\'t matter if your specific model isn\'t pictured in the book. All Garmin screens and functionality are near identical and I\'m guessing Magellan will be the same, too. So, whatever unit you use, you are well catered for. The introductory chapters are superb, and the graphics throughout the book are exemplary. Digital mapping is also clearly explained and presents an unbiased view of the several mapping companies out there. I am very puzzled by the couple of less-than-favourable comments below - what are you looking for exactly? For beginners, I cannot find a better, more practical introduction to the subject than this book, written BY users FOR users. In conjunction with the guide, I also recommend attending one or more of the practical day courses which the authors run, held throughout the UK (see their web site). You will become not only a GPS power user, but also a much safer and more confident walker. In summary, buy the book in complete confidence - IMHO, user guides/manuals really don\'t get any better than this. Garmin, et al, PLEASE take note. By the way, I have no connection whatever to the authors or their Company.
Customer Review: For me, this is the best book on the market
I have read the other critical reviews posted here. I have looked at the main books on the market in the bookshops and decided to go for this book.

Yes - it is written by an organisation that runs GPS training courses but I think they understand what people need to know? The step-by-step guides are NOTHING like the ones in the user manual. They are really useful, being written by people who seem to have an ability to explian not just what you need to do but why. Virtually everything you can do with your GPS is covered in a logical stage by stage approach using screen diagrams that show you what you should be seeing on the screen.

I think this book is well worth the money. It is nearly 200 pages long and virtually every page has something of use to the reader. In my view if you buy this book you will not be disappointed.
